How To Set Stretch Goals At Work To Drive Career Growth Successfully

Recently, I challenged myself by competing in a higher tennis category than my usual level. I won my first round but lost the next against an opponent who pushed out of my comfort zone. It wasn’t easy, but it reminded me of something important: growth doesn’t come from staying where we feel safe. It comes from taking on stretch goals that challenge us.

In our careers, it’s tempting to stick with what we know. Comfort feels rewarding in the short term, but over time, it breeds complacency, boredom, and even disengagement. When work becomes too familiar, motivation fades and development stalls. In fact, without new challenges, burnout can set in even faster, because without growth, it’s harder to find a sense of purpose.

Why Stretch Goals Matter

Stretch goals are those just beyond our current abilities — not impossible, but not easy either. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi described this as the flow zone: too easy creates boredom, too hard creates anxiety, but the right stretch sparks learning and focus.

Performance coach Steve Magness, in his book Peak Performance, explains it this way: “Skills come from struggle.” When we practice a new skill, the neural connections are weak. However, if we persevere through the struggle, even to the point of failure, and continue working at it, the brain produces more myelin, thereby strengthening those connections. Over time, what once felt like a struggle becomes second nature.

Professionals who avoid stretch goals may feel safe, but they also risk stagnation. In my book Timebox, I explain how the inability to stay in flow often leads to procrastination: the mind seeks distraction when challenges don’t fully engage it. By contrast, those who embrace stretch goals, even when they stumble, build skills, resilience, and confidence. They discover not only what they can do today, but where they can continue to grow tomorrow.

How to Set Stretch Goals at Work

1) Go one level up with your stretch goals

Volunteer for a project that challenges you just beyond your role. Don’t wait to feel “ready”, readiness comes through action. If you want to become a manager, lead a project, or attend a manager’s meeting.

2) Be specific

Instead of saying, “I want to grow,” define it: “I want to lead my first client presentation”, “I want to learn a new system,” or I want to play at the next level.

3) Track progress, not just outcomes

Success isn’t only the final result. Progress can be just showing up or doing a new task. As I mentioned in previous articles, perfectionism can lead to endless tweaking or overly focusing on outcomes; therefore, focus on “progress for now” rather than perfection.

4) Normalize the struggles

If you’re uncomfortable, you’re in the right place. Setbacks mean you’re stretching, not failing. Clarify your expectations so you are not expecting smooth sailing; otherwise, you’ll get discouraged. If you expect challenges, you’ll see them as part of the growth process. Stress stimulates growth. It is not always harmful; in the right does stimulate physical and psychological adaptation.

Growth Lives in the Stretch Goals

It’s natural to want to protect ourselves from disappointment, but avoiding challenges also blocks progress. Stretch goals don’t always bring immediate wins, but they guarantee growth.

This week, ask yourself: Where can I challenge myself? What are my next stretch goals? You may fail on the first try, but you’ll move closer to the professional (and person) you want to become.
