Stop Over-Preparation: 3 Pillars To Shift From Control To Curiosity lucy paulise coach

You probably think high performance is about keeping everything under control through exhaustive over-preparation.

Yet, this relentless habit of over-preparing and over-functioning is precisely why so many leaders hit an invisible wall. Over-preparing is rarely about excellence. In reality, it is high-functioning anxiety, a subconscious attempt to manufacture guaranteed outcomes before you even step into the room.

Demanding absolute certainty forces your nervous system into hyper-vigilance. Over-preparation consumes double the cognitive bandwidth before performance even starts, narrowing strategic vision and leading directly to decision fatigue, choked execution, and eventual burnout.

To break this cycle, high performers must replace the demand for control with the practice of Curiosity.

The Certainty Trap vs. The Curiosity State

Certainty is rigid: it forces reality to fit a pre-made plan. When things inevitably change, leaders who demand certainty tend to freeze, micromanage, or force outcomes.

Curiosity, on the other hand, is adaptive. It accepts that high-stakes environments are inherently unpredictable. Instead of forcing control, curiosity creates the psychological safety and cognitive agility needed to respond dynamically in real time.

Here is how you can use curiosity to lead through three tactical pillars:

1. Detach from the Outcome (Regulated Ambition)

The obsession with certainty roots a leader’s focus entirely in the future, such as closing the deal, hitting the metric, or avoiding failure. This outcome-fixation registers in the brain as a threat, triggering a subtle fight-or-flight state that degrades executive presence.

You may confuse healthy ambition with fear-driven outcome attachment. To break free, you need to shift your mindset from “I must control how this lands” to “I am curious to see how this unfolds.” Detaching from the outcome doesn’t mean pulling back effort; it means accepting that you cannot control every variable, which frees up your mental bandwidth to execute effortlessly.

2. The 50% Rule (Active Surrender)

Because other people are always part of the equation, leaders trapped in over-preparation tend to over-function in interactions. By attempting to engineer 90% to 100% of a meeting, negotiation, or strategic vision, they leave zero operational vacuum for others to step into.

Own your 50% by clearly stating your facts, explaining your rationale, and supporting your viewpoint, then intentionally pause at the center line. Explicitly pose the question, “What are your thoughts?” and hold space within the silence for their reply rather than stepping in to fill the gap. This forms a Strategic Vacuum where curiosity drives the engagement. Do not overstep into their space; their 50% is just like any relationship where you cannot shoulder all the weight. Do your part, and if they do not meet you halfway, you can simply ask them about it or accept their current capacity.

3. Normalize the Expectations (Energy Management)

When you stop over-functioning, you begin to calibrate reality. Curiosity helps you realize that outcomes are rarely as catastrophic or as triumphant as high-functioning anxiety suggests. This clarity allows you to manage your energy based on your actual values rather than fear.

Operating as if every meeting carries life-or-death weight is a trap. Sacrificing your health and personal life to “save” a performance that never required that level of sacrifice. Use curiosity instead to normalize your expectations by asking: “What is the worst that can happen? What is the best? What is the reality?” Grounding yourself in reality allows you to dial back the intensity on low-stakes items and reinvest that saved energy into what truly matters.

Control is an illusion that costs high performers their bandwidth, clarity, and resilience. Over-preparation demands that you force the room; curiosity allows you to read it.

When you substitute the exhausting demand for control through over-preparation with genuine strategic curiosity, you move from force to flow, regaining your power without burning out.
